As can be seen from the Visa Class & Subclass Table, the visa subclasses are broken up into different categories, for example, ‘Independent’. Following is a brief description of these categories and the accompanying criteria. Broadly, there are 5 categories in the Skilled Migration area available to candidates wishing to migrate to Australia:


Independent Skilled Migration

  • You must have skills, qualifications and work experience, which will enable you to obtain employment and contribute to the Australia economy.
  • You must meet the General Eligibility Criteria for skilled migration and pass the points test.
  • Both ‘onshore’ and ‘offshore’ visas are available.
  • You are neither, sponsored by an Australian employer or Australian relative.


Family or State/Territory Sponsored Skilled Migration

  • You must have skills, qualifications and work experience, which will enable you to obtain employment and contribute to the Australia economy.
  • You must meet the General Eligibility Criteria for skilled migration and pass the points test.
  • Both ‘onshore’ and ‘offshore’ visas are available.
  • You must have an Australian relative who is willing to sponsor you or be sponsored by an Australian State/Territory Government.
  • Australian relative includes any of the following relationships; parent, child, adopted child, step child, brother, sister, adoptive brother, adoptive sister, step-brother, step-sister, aunt, uncle, adoptive aunt, adoptive uncle, step-aunt, step-uncle, nephew, niece, adoptive nephew, adoptive niece, step-nephew, step-niece, grandparent or first cousin.


Regional Sponsored Skilled Migration (Provisional & Residence)

  • You must receive sponsorship by either a State/Territory Government or an Australian Relative.
  • Must live and work in ‘designated’ and/or ‘regional’ area for 2-years on a Provisional Visa before applying for Permanent Regional Visa (Residence).
  • You must meet the General Eligibility Criteria for skilled migration and pass the points test. English concessions may apply, with fee for additional language training.
  • Both ‘onshore’ and ‘offshore’ visas are available.
  • Australian relative includes any of the following relationships; parent, child, adopted child, step child, brother, sister, adoptive brother, adoptive sister, step-brother, step-sister, aunt, uncle, adoptive aunt, adoptive uncle, step-aunt, step-uncle, nephew, niece, adoptive nephew, adoptive niece, step-nephew, step-niece, grandparent or first cousin.
  • Range of options available, including overseas students who have finished their studies in Australia and holders of temporary work visas.


Graduate Skilled Migration (Non-Points Tested)

  • You must have completed studies in Australia or at a leading overseas tertiary institution.
  • You must meet the General Eligibility Criteria for skilled migration.
  • No points test required.
  • Both ‘onshore’ and ‘offshore’ visas are available.
  • Provisional and temporary visas only. Applicants may go on to apply for Permanent Residence once work experience/professional year is obtained and/or English ability improves.
  • Offshore applicants must be under 31-years of age at time of application and have completed a skill within the last 24 months deemed by the Australian Government to be in high demand. Currently only ‘engineering’. Applicants must have excellent English ability.


Employer Nominated Skilled Migration

  • You must be highly skilled, under 45-years of age and nominated for employment by an Australian business on a contractual basis.
  • No point test required.
  • Vocational (ENS) or Functional (RSMS) English ability acceptable, depending on circumstances. Will need to undergo English test. English language charge may apply.
  • Skills assessment required plus at least 3-years post-qualification experience OR be highly paid (Minimum $165,000 for senior executives) OR have worked in the nominated occupation in Australia on a temporary visa for at least the last 2-years, and have worked for the nominating employer for at least 1-year immediately prior to application.
